Bayshore Home Health puts grandparents' stories online

By Eve Lazarus

Louise Robertson with Bayshore Home Health Manager of Clinical Practice Patricia ComptonThe Vancouver office of Bayshore Home Health, a home and community health care service, is putting its marketing dollars into social media with the launch of a storytelling Tumblr site at BeforeTheyWereGrandparents.com.

The site by Village & Co launched with a live event where people of all generations were filmed sharing stories and memories. The idea behind the event and the site is to provide an ongoing and accessible way of preserving the stories of previous generations, said Justin Young, creative director and founder of Village & Co.

Young said research indicates that the responsibility of caring for an elderly parent typically falls to the eldest daughter, and social media seemed the best way to reach this target and raise awareness for both the brand and an issue that is generally not top of mind.

"We needed to make this brand relevant to people who are not necessarily in the market right now," said Young. "For us, it was clear from the very beginning that the amplification abilities of social media and the storytelling prowess of grandparents would be a perfect pairing."

Bayshore Home Health is based in Mississauga, Ont. and operates home care offices and clinics across Canada.
