Better care for a better life

Free certificate course from Bayshore Home Health helps people 60-plus live independently in their own homes

Mississauga, ON, Sept. 13, 2010 – Bayshore Home Health, Canada's largest home health care provider, is working with Family Physiotherapy Centre in Ottawa to offer people 60-plus a free eight-week certificate course. The course, called "60-plus and going strong: Wellness 101," is designed to promote long-term health, wellness and fall prevention in the home.

"There's a growing interest in illness prevention strategies amongst Canadians," says Jennifer May, community relations manager for Bayshore Home Health. "This wellness program focuses on eight specific areas of health that can help those over 60 prolong independence, prevent health crisis and avoid admission to hospital or a long-term care facility."

Each of the eight sessions is conducted by a health care specialist and includes a 45-minute, interactive presentation plus 15 minutes for questions and socializing. Upon completion of the program, a personalized certificate is presented to the participant that will help to give the entire family some peace of mind, knowing their aging loved one is taking proactive steps in managing their health.

Course topics include:

  • Managing health and well-being
  • Minimizing infection risk
  • Medication use and management
  • Nutrition needs and risks
  • Physical mobility and activity
  • Fall prevention
  • Home safety hazards
  • Skin health

"Participants will gain valuable information on the importance of each area of health, potential risks and symptoms to watch for, as well as strategies to best promote and manage their health," adds Steve Brown, president and owner of Family Physiotherapy Centre. "They'll get tips on how to stay active, eat well, minimize common ailments, and prevent injury and falls. At the end of each session they'll also have the opportunity to speak with specialists from the community and share solutions with other participants."

The fall sessions for "60-plus and going strong: Wellness 101" begin on Tuesday, October 5, 2010 and will be held at two Ottawa locations – Family Physiotherapy Wellness Centre at Bank Street and Heron Road and Forever Young Studio, Westgate Shopping Mall. For more information or to enroll today, people should contact Stephen Cordani at 613-521-9800 ext. 232.
