Better care for a better life

Bayshore Specialty Rx opens state-of-the-art infusion pharmacy in Markham

Improves patient care with integrated approach to community infusion services

Markham, Ontario, March 27, 2009 – Bayshore Specialty Rx, a subsidiary of Bayshore Home Health, announced the official opening today of its 10,600 square-foot, state-of-the-art infusion pharmacy in Markham. This centralized facility specializes in the preparation of a wide range of drugs used by recipients of home infusions. It also supports pharmaceutical companies as well as Bayshore Home Health’s national infusion and specialty medication distribution system and its network of infusion clinics across the country.

“The goal of our new infusion pharmacy is to improve patient care and health care outcomes,” says Sahar Whelan, Director of Pharmacy for Bayshore Home Health. “This flagship pharmacy supports government funded home infusion programs, giving patients quicker access to care and reducing pressure on hospital emergency rooms.”

The new infusion pharmacy specializes in the preparation, storage and delivery of infusible and injectable drugs used in anti-infection therapy, chemotherapy, palliative care, enzyme replacement therapy, TPN (total parenteral nutrition) and more. The modern facility provides a number of services including ongoing research into new infusion products, practice expertise in high-touch drugs, specialized training for nurses on how to use infusion equipment and a 24/7 hotline for consultation on medications.

“Our pharmacy staff go above and beyond to meet patient’s needs,” adds Whelan. “We provide expert consultation and technical support to streamline patient care and get people out of the hospital sooner.”

The new facility, located at 70 Esna Park Drive in Markham, has space to store medications and supplies, two sterile rooms to prepare drugs, new high-tech equipment and modern production systems. It also offers the potential to expand the company’s warehousing, distribution and manufacturing services and take on more projects and clinical trials from pharmaceutical companies.

"I extend my sincere congratulations to Bayshore Specialty Rx on the opening of their new facility in Markham," said Michael Chan, M.P.P., Markham-Unionville. "They are a welcome addition to our community and will support both the local economy and our health care system. It is my sincere hope that they will have great success in making a difference in the lives of Ontarians," added Chan.

The infusion pharmacy supports government-funded home infusion programs across Canada and has contracts with a number of Community Care Access Centres in Ontario. Additional clients include pharmaceutical companies and other health care organizations.

Bayshore Specialty Rx’s goal is to improve patient care through an integrated approach to home and community infusion services. In addition to the new pharmacy, it brings together two additional core services into an integrated, one-stop process that supports the unique needs of every patient: community care clinics and pharmaceutical support services.

The Markham pharmacy supports a national network of 23 community care clinics, including 14 in Ontario, allowing people who need infusion and injection medications to receive them in a comfortable, non-hospital environment. Specially-trained nurses administer the infusion and monitor the patient afterwards. The clinics also have the expertise to administer a wide range of drugs by injection.

Bayshore Specialty Rx also assists pharmaceutical companies through a wide range of support services that include specialized nursing, reimbursement programs, home infusions, injection training, clinical trials support and drug warehousing and distribution. These services complement the infusion pharmacy and community care clinics by providing insight into a wide range of medications.

“We aim to provide the best quality care we possibly can,” concludes Whelan. “Our new facility and the services we offer are focused on our clients and the quality of our products.”
