Bayshore HealthCare launches pilot program in Thunder Bay for virtual physician visits

Written by: Dunham

MISSISSAUGA, ON (1 June 2017) – Bayshore HealthCare is starting a new era in patient care to enable virtual visits by specialist physicians, saving time, travel and increased expense, particularly for people in smaller centres and remote areas. The project was launched in Thunder Bay, Ontario today.

The technology allows patients to be connected virtually in real time with specialists in major centres, removing the barriers of distance and travel times. These virtual visits allow physicians to see their patients for both initial and follow up visits, to address potential issues before they become serious and to improve the patient experience.

“Being able to serve patients in smaller centres with this technology will bring tremendous relief for many patients and take some pressure off our healthcare system,” says Stuart Cottrelle, president, Bayshore HealthCare. “A patient will not need to travel to see a physician specialist, as they can visit them virtually through this technology. The results in Thunder Bay will help us to expand the program across Canada.”

The technology, which is Bluetooth enabled, was created by MD Matrix of Toronto. It combines online physician access, digital patient records and real-time streaming of patient vitals.

The Thunder Bay pilot project will provide patients with access to a rheumatologist from the Greater Toronto Area, Dr. Karasik, past President of the Ontario Rheumatology Association. During the virtual visit, the specialist will be supported by a certified ACPAC practitioner (Advanced Clinical Practitioner in Arthritis Care), who will assist the patient in the Bayshore clinic in Thunder Bay.

“The potential this offers in reducing wait times to see a specialist and increased access for patients is game changing,” adds Cottrelle. “These virtual visits could be extended to multiple diseases as well as to routine visits making it convenient and easy for the patient, while providing accurate information to the specialist.”
