It was a pleasure to help someone in need

One of our caregivers let us know that a client had a broken door handle that she considered to be dangerous. My husband and I purchased a new door handle and went over to repair the door last weekend. Our client, who has cancer and undergoes chemotherapy, was unable to do this herself, and lives alone most of the time. She was afraid to use the door as the old handle was very sharp. It was a pleasure to help someone in need.

I wanted to pay it forward in kindness

One of my clients had broken a glass in his home, and when he tried to clean it up, he discovered is vacuum was broken and he was unable to properly clean up the mess. He called the office aksing for help and I agreed to go over to help him out. I brought my vacuum and had it all cleaned up that same morning. I wanted to make sure the client wasn’t charged for my visit, so I let the office now there was no need to pay me for the visit – I wanted to pay it forward in kindness.

It’s made meal times so much easier

My client Richard spends a lot of his time in bed and had a little table beside his bed he uses to eat from. The table was not practical because he had to bend over and down to reach his food. When I was out picking up groceries, I noticed a hospital table that was higher than the table Richard has been using. I thought it would be perfect for Richard and help make eating less difficult, so I picked it up and took it over to Richard’s home. He has been very thankful for this and has made meal times so much easier.

Seeing their smiles is why I love working with them

Since my client’s wife’s cancer diagnosis, I’ve been doing what I can to make things easier on both my client and his wife. I help her with tasks she cannot do because of the medications she is taking and have also offered to do some grocery shopping for them on my own time before coming for my visits since she is not supposed to be in busy public areas. They took me up on the offer of grocery shopping and seeing their smiles when I arrived is why I love working with them.

I love spending time with her

I work full time night shifts with a client who suffers from Alzheimer’s. I’ve been able to build a wonderful rapport with this client as well as others. If my client needs me to come earlier or stay later, I don’t mind as I love spending time with her.

I was honoured to be able to help

I was originally hired on as a foot care nurse, but I also pick up nursing shifts or even PSW shifts when asked. I love caring for our clients. I recently spent several days with a palliative client of ours, knowing he needed me to be there for him. The family was so pleased and appreciated my help so much that they thanked me in the obituary. I was honoured to be able to help.

I took on extra hours to make sure they were cared for

I look after an elderly couple who recently came down with Norovirus. One of my colleagues, who also cares for them, also came down with the illness. Knowing they would not receive all the care they normally do with my colleague off work, I took on extra hours, checking in on them every day, making sure they were okay. Although their son also got sick, I was lucky and stayed healthy.

I’m not going to let a broken arm stop me!

Recently, while off work, I broke my arm. My colleagues thought I would be off work for a while, but I love being part of the Bayshore team! I’m not going to let one hand stop me! I even had the chance to play a game of badminton with my client, JF. Commitment in a cast!

When no male PSW was available, I stepped in.

My client Mark M. is a very shy gentleman who only wanted a male PSW to provide personal care. Unfortunately, with only one male PSW in the branch, his availability was limited. I met Mark and his wife and we hit if off! We’ve been able to add extra shifts each week to help Mark out and now Mark and his wife joke that he would happily swap his wife for me.

I love my job.

As a caregiver I have the opportunity to visit with a number of clients. I’ve been providing housekeeping services everyday for a new client, and have built a great rapport with her. Before I started working in her home, she wouldn’t let anyone else in. I recently purchased a new couch and gave her my old one as her couch was in really bad shape. It’s nice to be able to help our clients above and beyond what we are hired to do.

Harry is a true gentleman with a huge loving heart….and being here with him is blissful.

I recently started working with Bayshore Home Health in Sault Ste. Marie and met Henry on my first shift. I’m spending time with Henry to give his family a break from caregiving duties, and helping out with housekeeping and laundry. Henry lives with his daughter and granddaughter so there is always something I can do to help out.

Bayshore makes me feel like I have a purpose.

I’ve been a nurse, an RPN, for 26 years. I’ve worked everything from cardiology to pulmonary, GI, emergency, geriatric, long-term care – you name it. I joined Bayshore in 2018 after many years of working in facilities. I love home care now, and I’ll never go back! Bayshore has great morale and camaraderie. It’s a very friendly and happy culture. Everyone is so supportive. I don’t think I’d want to work anywhere else, to tell you the truth. I’m bragging about Bayshore all over town to my friends, telling them to apply for jobs. I’m really happy to be here.

He was so happy and grateful.

Recently my client’s husband called after he realized that his wife didn’t have her heavy winter coat or mitts for her outing and it was very cold out. I let him know not to worry, I would stop by and pick up his wife’s outdoor clothing prior to going to pick her up for her outing. He was so happy and grateful.

I thoroughly enjoy the time we get to spend together.

I have a great rapport with many of my clients and recently one of my client’s family requested that the hours we spend together be increased. The family sees the great relationship we have and how successful I am in providing care to their mom compared to other caregivers. I was even able to start bathing their mom, a new experience for me. I thoroughly enjoy the time we get to spend together.

Not only does my client L. make me smile, she inspires me. We started talking about my pet rabbit Daisy and now I share videos of Daisy in her greatest moments with L. This always brings happiness to L. When I arrive for the visit, she is quick to ask about my Daisy, and the snuggles we have. I look forward to spending many more moments with L.

I worked it out with my other employer that I could continue to take RB to his appointments

I had to let my client, R.B., know that I would no longer be able to provide care to him due to conflicts with my other employer. After realizing that he may no longer attend his physiotherapy appointments without me, I worked it out with my other employer that I could continue to take RB to his appointments. We now book his physio appointments a month in advance so I have lots of time to plan my schedule with my other employer.

she was beyond happy to have her nails painted in time for Christmas!

My client is no longer able to get her nails done, as most places are not wheelchair accessible. I offered to paint her nails and told her would be happy to show up early for an evening visit to be able to get this done. Today my client showed off her nicely red painted nails she was beyond happy to have her nails painted in time for Christmas!

I want to ensure he is well taken care of, and don’t mind being there for him on my own time.

I kept in touch with my client Gerald, while he was in the hospital. I visited with him a few times while he was there; providing companionship, helping him to eat meals and drink tea. I made sure I was there when he was discharged, to see if he needed any help. I want to ensure he is well taken care of, and don’t mind being there for him on my own time.

we have built up such a good rapport he is more accepting of care and even has me escort him to his physiotherapy sessions

My client, Mr. R. B. is a bachelor who lives alone and he was reluctant to receive care as he was self-conscious of his home. I’ve been providing care for him since December 5, 2018 and we have built up such a good rapport he is more accepting of care and even has me escort him to his physiotherapy sessions.

Before visiting him, I built a snowman so he could see it when he looked out his window.

After picking up my client at 7am, I took her to the college where she was taking classes. I stayed with her throughout the day and took her home at 4:30 when classes were finished. After taking my first client home, I then visited a client in a neighbouring town at a retirement residence where he lived. Arriving at the residence at 7pm, I visited with the client until 10pm, helping him get ready for bed, then left for an overnight visit with a third client until 7am the next morning. At 7 am I returned to the retirement residence to get my client ready for they day. Before visiting him, I built a snowman so he could see it when he looked out his window.

It was a long day for both of us (19.5 hours) but I’m happy I was able to support my client throughout her journey.

I have been caring for an elderly woman with a broken arm, who can be a little stubborn at times, but we get along great. My client is very appreciative of the care we provide, so when she needed someone to accompany her to a medical appointment 3 hours away, I didn’t hesitate. At the appointment, our client was told she would require surgery on her arm. Again, I didn’t hesitate to let her know I would be there for her.

A few days later we set out together for the hospital at 8 am. As there was no set time for the operation we both sat and waited together. The surgery was finally completed and went well. At 3:30 the next morning, my client was allowed to return home. It was a long day for both of us (19.5 hours) but I’m happy I was able to support my client throughout her journey.

Yesterday she was amazed that there was 'absolutely no pain' and she ‘could have fallen asleep while being treated’.

For over 20 years, my client has suffered with Hyperkeratosis and is in constant pain when she receives foot care treatment. Yesterday she was amazed that there was ‘absolutely no pain’ and she ‘could have fallen asleep while being treated’. As a foot care nurse, that was one of the best compliments I’ve ever received.

Knowing that the dog could use a walk, our Care Manager went over to the client’s home and took the dog out for a walk.

Our caregiver was quite ill and was unable to visit with her client. Turns out not only was our client sick as well, but so was her dog walker (our client has a service dog). Knowing that the dog could use a walk, our Care Manager went over to the client’s home and took the dog out for a walk. Our client was thrilled – as was her dog!

After the client was discharged from hospital, I decided to bring them some nice meals so that could be one less thing they would have to worry about.

Although I had booked the night off and had plans, I couldn’t leave him alone.

I received a call from one of my clients on New Year’s Eve letting me know his caregiver did not show up and he was wondering if I could come. Although I had booked the night off and had plans, I couldn’t leave him alone. I drove to his house and got him ready for bed.

Even if it was just a little thing that I had done, it meant the world to them.

I had been working with one of my clients who I work with on a weekly basis. For a few weeks she was having concerns of a burning smell in her home and could not quite pin point or indicate what the problem was or where it had been coming from. Each time I visited, I could tell this problem was becoming quite a burden to her. I tried to determine where the burning smell was coming from but I couldn’t find out exactly what it was. She had a few different people come in to the home to have a look and had things changed, but still that burning smell was there.

One morning upon arrival for my shift, I noticed the burning scent was stronger and hotter smelling, even worse than before. Something really was not right! As I was washing the floors I decided to check and feel the wires, plug-ins, power bars and cords – everything I possibly could in the living room. Finally, I had found something which I thought was odd and did not seem right to me. There was the fan on the floor the fan that my client used quite frequently. The fan and fan cord was burning hot! I immediately asked my client if she happened to have the fan on recently or on during the night. She had responded no. I told her we should unplug the fan right away as this could be a a fire hazard.

When her husband woke she got him to check the fan and he could not believe how hot it was they had both decided that then fan was really old and it was time it was thrown away. I completed my tasks and shortly before completing my shift, my client and her husband sincerely and pleasantly thanked me for taking the time to look and thinking of their safety. My client had a hard time finding words, as her eyes began to water and tears fell down her face in happiness. I knew how much her home had meant to her and her husband. Even if it was just a little thing that I had done, it meant the world to them.

The client said knowing their dog got along with me made them feel much more relaxed.

When I first visited my clients, they were nervous that their dog would not like me because their dog barks at everyone that comes to their home and the dog suffers from separation anxiety. Within minutes the client’s dog wanted to be cuddled up on my lap and was bringing me toys! The client said knowing their dog got along with me made them feel much more relaxed. We had an awesome visit and now the client looks forward to our next visit together!

They were so pleased with the care and rapport they saw between me and their Mom.

My client had refused her last bath at the retirement residence where she lives, but did allow me to give her a sponge bath and help her change into some nice clean clothes. She also let me brush and style her hair. The residence was having a ceremony for Remembrance Day and she was very excited to attend. We arrived at the ceremony arm in arm and were greeted by the other residents who were commenting on my client’s hair and appearance. I had the opportunity to meet my client’s family later that week and they were so pleased with the care and rapport they saw between me and their Mom.

I brought her to the mirror so that I can show her the results and she was very happy.

One of my clients lives in a retirement residence that was celebrating Breast Cancer Awareness Day and encouraged all residents to wear something pink. Unfortunately, my client did not own a pink item of clothing so she decided she would not participate in the event. Wanting her to attend, I decided to go out and buy her a checkered pink and white scarf/shawl and a pink hair clip to which I had attached pink curly ribbon strings.
Before my shift started, I went to see my client, got her up from bed and got her ready for the event. I brought her to the mirror so that I can show her the results and she was very happy. I then brought her down to the lounge where she received quite a few compliments from other PSW’s, the organizing coordinator and other residents.

She told me that I could bring my pjs and my dog for a sleepover

My client’s chair lift was broken, and while waiting for the technician to come out to repair it, I moved a piano to find that it was unplugged. My client was so appreciative, she told me that I could bring my pjs and my dog for a sleepover in the winter if there was ever a storm.

I cannot imagine working anywhere else.

I am a Registered Nurse that has been working in the Occupational Health field for the past 25 years. Working at Bayshore allows me the flexibility to continue working hours that suit my needs both at work and at home. I initially thought that I would work in this environment for just a few years while my children were young, but I found that I really enjoyed what I do and I cannot imagine working anywhere else. I have a great relationship with my co-workers, and the Bayshore office staff. Everyone is very supportive, helpful and approachable which is important to me.

Bayshore is a Great Place to Work

I think a person stays at a company for three reasons: 1) they like their job; 2) they like the people they work with; and 3) there is opportunity for advancement within the company. I am fortunate enough to have realized all three during my years with Bayshore. I have worked as Clinical Manager, Area Director, Director of Quality Improvement and Regional Director. Along the way, I’ve always had the pleasure of working with dedicated individuals who exemplified a commitment to clients and their fellow employees.

In my role as a PSW, I provide personal care for my clients including bathing, dressing, and skin care. The flexibility of my work schedule in this role has worked wonderfully while raising a family.
