More than 400 home caregivers receive dementia training from Bayshore HealthCare

MISSISSAUGA, ON (17 January 2017) – Recognizing that January is Alzheimer Awareness Month, Bayshore HealthCare announces that it has become the first home care company in Canada to train more than 400 of its caregivers and managers to specifically work with dementia patients. Beginning in October 2016, Bayshore partnered with Personalized Dementia Solutions Inc. to offer an online certificate course, Cracking the Dementia Code™.

The online course provided to Bayshore HealthCare caregivers is a self-paced training program that teaches techniques for managing behaviours to improve the lives of patients and their families. Although individual programs are customized for each patient, the typical Bayshore caregiver will spend 12 hours per day, five days per week, providing companionship, personal care, housekeeping, meal preparation and assessing the safety of the home environment. The course offers effective methods to manage dementia related behaviours and the top therapeutic communication techniques that are required for day-to-day support.

“Bayshore can now provide an unprecedented level of dementia care across Canada as a result of the training our caregivers are receiving from this program,” says Keena Naik, Regional Director, Bayshore Home Health. “With a better understanding of the complexities of dementia, we can now offer greater and much-needed support to families and their loved ones.”

According to the Alzheimer Society of Canada, 25,000 new cases are diagnosed every year and by 2031 more than 937,000 Canadians will be living with dementia. It is estimated that one in three Canadians are or know someone affected by Alzheimer’s disease or another related dementia.

“Our mission has been to change the way dementia-related behaviours are managed,” says Karen Tyrell, founder, Personalized Dementia Solutions Inc., and Certified Dementia Practitioner (CDP). “We have created a model that is based on compassionate, person-centered care that results in more harmony and quality of life for all those affected by dementia.”

Bayshore HealthCare is one of the country’s leading providers of home and community health care services and a Canadian-owned company.
