Canadian Patient Safety Week: Client Stories

| News and Stories

As part of Canadian Patient Safety Week, we’re celebrating Bayshore staff who are leading the way in safety, quality assurance and excellency in patient care! Today we hear from Aa-Na Kwak-Tomovski who shares a story about their mother’s outstanding patient experience at a Bayshore Transitional Care Unit (TCU) in Scarborough, ON.

“I wanted to take the opportunity to thank the Bayshore TCU staff at Cedarbrook Lodge Retirement Residence for the personalized care and respect given to my mother. She came to Bayshore in late August 2022 to rehabilitate and transition back home after being at North York General Hospital (NYGH) for three months. She was very hesitant to leave NYGH and go to the Bayshore TCU but from the moment she arrived, the staff worked to make her feel comfortable and at ease. My mother’s health was on an upward trajectory, and she was taking daily walks by herself down to the gardens at Cedarbrook Lodge within weeks!

Unfortunately, she fell ill with a virus in September and has had to restart her rehabilitation. She is slowly feeling stronger, with the great support and encouragement from the Bayshore Therapy team. Every day, she is making progress. She can now stand with no assistance and walk to the elevator with some breaks. After her emergency stay at the hospital last month, she was so thrilled to get back to the Bayshore TCU. When I asked how she was feeling she said, “Wonderful! I’m so happy to be back at Bayshore!”

My deepest thanks to Nanette Climans, Nurse Practitioner, and Namritha Shetty, Occupational Therapist. They have both shown so much compassion and patience with my mother and myself and I am grateful for their reassuring emails and phone calls on her progress. We feel very fortunate that my mother is having this great opportunity to get stronger at the Bayshore TCU under their well-trained and compassionate staff! I am very confident with the great progress we’ve witnessed previously and the current progress she’s made so far after coming back from the hospital last month. Many thanks to the remarkable staff at the Bayshore TCU for providing the best transitional care and creating a safe environment for my mother!”
