The Frontline Foundation Behind Elizabeth Thain’s Leadership

For more than twenty years, Bayshore HealthCare has set aside a week in October to celebrate its more than 11,000 paraprofessional health care providers who care for our patients across Canada. For Elizabeth Thain, that work was the beginning of a two-decade journey: one that took her from the bedside to a leadership role, but never far from the frontline.
Elizabeth’s journey began in the community, delivering personal support services. She built meaningful one-on-one connections with patients and saw firsthand how care supports their comfort, dignity, and quality of life. The experience deepened her appreciation for the vital contributions frontline workers make every day, and Bayshore HealthCare gave her the opportunities to build on that foundation.
Two decades later, she knows the work from the inside: she did it herself, and she now leads people who do it still. Her path from bedside care to Area Director was shaped by the lessons she learned working closely with patients and families, and by an organization that kept opening doors for her growth.
“I absolutely loved taking care of people. It helped me realize that care is built through presence, patience, and trust.”
That understanding took root while she cared for a patient with brain cancer who could no longer speak or leave her bed. The patient smiled every time Elizabeth arrived, and over time Elizabeth learned to read her needs without words, whether painting her nails, sharing quiet moments, or simply being present.
When the patient passed, her family gave Elizabeth a framed photo of the two of them together. The frame says one word: Family. It still sits on her desk today. More than a keepsake, it is a daily reminder of the impact frontline caregivers have on the people and families they support.
The work was rewarding and difficult, and it taught Elizabeth something she has carried into every role since: frontline staff need strong support systems, because they give so much of themselves while helping others.
That conviction is why she now works to be one of those supports for her own teams. After two years working in the community, Elizabeth moved into client service, operations, and leadership roles, eventually becoming Area Director for Bayshore Home Care Solutions in Chatham and Windsor. Each step expanded her perspective, but her frontline experience remains her anchor.
Elizabeth builds her leadership on the realities she faced on the frontline. Today she creates space for honest, judgment-free conversations and gives her team a voice. For her teams, that means a leader who understands the weight of the work and advocates for the people who do it.
“I can truly say I know what it is like to work in the community and how hard it can be. That understanding shapes how I listen, support, and lead my teams,” says Elizabeth.
Elizabeth’s story shows that compassionate care begins with the people who deliver care at the bedside. It also reflects what is possible when an organization invests in caregivers and the leaders they can become, because when caregivers feel supported, patients and families receive care that is truly personalized and centered on their needs.
